Top tips for fire safety during celebrations
- Review your annual celebrations calendar to identify opportunities to talk to children and parents about fire safety. Share the tips in a newsletter or create a visual display for parents
- Use LED candles during activities and celebration experiences. If using real candles, place them on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from children, curtains, decorations and furniture
- Never leave children unsupervised with lit flames or heat sources
- Ensure matches, lighters and candles are completely out of children's reach
- Talk to children about fire safety and the importance of staying back from fire and other heat sources
- Have a bucket of cold water available near any real fire source. If using sparklers, place them into a bucket of water immediately after use
- Switch off fairy lights when not in use
- Keep all electrical cables and extension leads tidy and away from children's play areas and do not overload electrical sockets
- Ensure you have a working smoke alarm and appropriate fire-safety equipment where required (for example a fire blanket or fire extinguisher)
- If cooking or using hot food/drinks, keep children away from hot surfaces and appliances
