Top tips: Fire Safety

Fire safety is a vital part of keeping children, staff and visitors safe in a day nursery. While the chances of a fire are low, being well-prepared ensures that everyone knows what to do in an emergency. By having clear procedures, the right equipment and regular training, nurseries can create a safe environment. Our top tips highlight key steps to maintain strong fire safety practices.

Top tips for fire safety

  1. Have a clear fire safety policy and ensure all your staff know the procedures and they are reviewed regularly
  2. Keep fire exits clear – ensure doors, corridors and escape routes are always free from obstructions and are clearly marked as fire exits
  3. Check equipment regularly by having a procedure in place to test smoke alarms, fire alarms and emergency lighting weekly and service fire extinguishers annually
  4. Practice evacuations and carry them out at different times of the day so staff and children are familiar with the routine
  5. Ensure all staff are trained so they know how to raise the alarm and safely evacuate children including babies and children with additional needs
  6. Maintain safe environments by regularly checking for hazards such as trailing wires and flammable materials near heat sources
  7. Switch off electrical equipment when not in use and only use approved, well-maintained items
  8. Keep records of all fire drills, alarm tests, equipment checks and staff training
  9. Invite your local fire service to give advice and to talk to the children
  10. Reassure children and explain fire drills in a calm, age-appropriate way so they don’t feel frightened.
