This open-ended experience encourages children to experiment, create and express their ideas freely, supporting their curiosity and individuality.

Nature inspired playdough exploration learning aims

  • To explore creativity and imagination using playdough and a variety of resources
  • To develop fine motor skills by manipulating the dough
  • To support language development by encouraging children to describe their creations, textures and actions
  • To build confidence and independence through self-directed exploration and sharing ideas and creations with others.

  • Create a welcoming and inspiring play space with the play dough and a rich variety of natural materials, tools with interesting textures and scents that spark curiosity and creativity
  • Invite children to explore freely, remembering there is no right or wrong way to play. Encourage them to squeeze, roll, pinch and shape the dough as they wish, following their interests and ideas. Support their creativity by observing closely, commenting on their actions and allowing them to lead their own unique play
  • Engage children in meaningful conversation by asking open-ended questions and show genuine interest in how the children are exploring the resources
  • Model new vocabulary and techniques as you play alongside them - demonstrating how to roll, flatten, press and shape the dough using different tools
  • Encourage children to explore the textures and scents, by mixing and pressing the flowers and herbs into the dough. Talk about the different textures and smells and what they remind them of, creating connections to the world around them
  • Celebrate every creation and give children the opportunity to share and describe their work, building confidence and pride in their ideas while nurturing their imagination.
